How to connect fiber to your router? An expert explains

Fiber is a smart choice for those who want fast and stable internet. You can easily video call, watch movies, stream music, or be online with multiple people at the same time. Without any hassle or interruptions. But how does it actually work? If you have a fiber connection at home, you naturally want to know how to connect everything properly. What does the technician do? And what do you do yourself?

Jeroen Dangremond, manager customer operations at Open Dutch Fiber, explains step by step how to connect fiber to your router and when you can go online.

How does fiber installation work?

If your house is connected to the fiber network, the cable ends in the house at the fiber connection point. This is a small white box, usually located in the meter cupboard. You will connect your router (or modem) to this box later on.

"The fiber point is always installed by our technician," Jeroen explains. "After that, we test if there is a signal. You don't have to do anything yourself."

Once your router is properly connected, you can go online.

What is the difference between fiber and your router?

The fiber cable provides a super-fast internet connection without interruptions. However, to use that connection at home, you need a router. It distributes the internet signal via wifi or with a network cable to your laptop, TV, or other devices.

"We take care of the connection all the way to the house," says Jeroen. "The provider then takes care of activating the internet. This is done through the router."

This is how you connect your router to fiber.

How you connect fiber to your router depends on your provider. In some cases, a technician will come by. In other cases, you will receive an installation package at home with clear instructions. Usually, it works like this:

  1. Connect the router to the fiber connection point using a network cable.

  2. Plug the router's plug into the power outlet.

  3. Wait until the lights come on.

  4. Follow the steps in the manual provided by your provider.

"Sometimes the provider arranges everything for you," says Jeroen. "But there are also providers where you connect the modem or router yourself. Fortunately, that is usually very simple."

What if it doesn't work out?

Having trouble getting online? Check if all cables are connected properly. See if the lights on the fiber point are on. If you don't see any green lights, there might be no signal.

"In that case, you contact your provider," Jeroen explains. "They will check if it's the router or the connection. If necessary, they will involve us."
