The installation of fiber optic in the house in 5 steps
How does the installation of fiber optic in a house work? Read in 5 simple steps how Open Dutch Fiber installs and brings fiber optic inside.
This is how the installation of fiber optic in a house works in 5 steps
Have you chosen fiber optic? Great! Then you will be all set for super fast and reliable internet soon. But first, the cable still needs to be installed in your house. How does that actually work? Does it require digging? Will there be people coming to your place? And how long does it take?
We asked Jeroen Dangremond, manager of customer operations at Open Dutch Fiber. He knows exactly how the installation works, from the sidewalk to the meter cupboard. In this article, he explains step by step what you can expect. This way, you know exactly what to expect.
1. We will make a plan together for the installation of fiber optic in the house.
Before we install fiber optic in the house, we first make a plan. This is called the survey. During the survey, an expert from Open Dutch Fiber will look together with you at the best route for the cable to enter. This could be through the crawl space or along the facade.
"We always discuss first how we bring the cable from outside to inside," says Jeroen. "Often the cable comes into the meter cupboard, but if that is not convenient, it can also come somewhere else. We think along with the resident in that."
You will also receive this plan on paper. We will only start working on it once you give your approval.
2. The fiber optic cable is installed indoors.
On the agreed day, a technician will come to actually install the fiber optic inside. In low-rise buildings, this usually happens through a drilling under the sidewalk and the front yard. In an apartment building, the cable goes through the central entrance and the staircase to the upper floors. "In low-rise buildings, we are usually busy for about 2 to 3 hours," says Jeroen. "In apartments, it's an average of 45 minutes per unit."
The connection is made as neatly as possible, without mess and with as little inconvenience as possible.
3. We install the fiber optic point in the house.
The cable ends at a fixed point in your home: the FTU (Fiber Termination Unit). This is usually located in the meter cupboard, but upon request, it can also be placed elsewhere, such as in the living room. "If residents prefer to have their modem in the living room and it is technically feasible, we will ensure that the connection is made there," says Jeroen. This way, you can easily connect your modem and equipment to the fiber optic network in the future.

4. We are testing the connection.
After installation, we test if everything works. Our own technicians do that. This way we make sure that the signal arrives well in your home. "We want to make sure that everything works well. That's why we measure the connection ourselves and keep control over the quality," explains Jeroen.
We will only finish it properly once the connection is good.
5. Your provider takes care of activation.
Once the fiber optic cable is installed in your house, it's time to connect your modem. A modem is a small box that transmits the internet signal to your devices, such as your Wi-Fi router, TV, or computer. Without a modem, you cannot use your fiber optic connection.
Your provider ensures that everything works. Sometimes they send a technician, sometimes you receive a package with which you can install everything yourself.
"In most cases, the provider comes by themselves to get everything up and running," says Jeroen. "We are no longer involved in that."
From that moment on, you can use superfast internet via fiber optic.
