Fiber optic in your apartment or flat? 5 things to consider

Do you live in an apartment or apartment building and want to know about fiber optic internet? You are not alone. Many residents wonder if they will be automatically connected and what they need to do themselves. Jeroen Dangremond, manager of customer operations at Open Dutch Fiber, knows exactly how it works in apartment buildings and explains what you need to consider. This way, you will soon know where you stand.

1. Permission is required from the homeowners' association or landlord.

Before we can start with fiber optic in an apartment building or complex, we need permission from the building owner. Usually, this is the owners' association or a housing corporation. "We will contact the owners' association ourselves," says Jeroen. "We explain what we are doing, how we plan to install it, and ask for approval." Only when we have that permission, we can start working. Curious about how this process works exactly? Read about it in the article. 2. You need to be home for the connection.

When your home is being connected, a technician will come by. They will bring the cable into your home and install the fiber optic point, usually in the meter cupboard. "We can only connect if the resident is at home and gives permission," explains Jeroen. "Without access, we can't do anything." You will receive an appointment well in advance, so you know when the technician will visit.

3. Fiber optic in an apartment building often runs through the neighbors.

In an apartment building, the cables often run through the meter cupboards of the downstairs neighbors to the upper floors. If one resident does not give permission, sometimes we cannot connect the apartments above as well. "We call this dependency on passage," says Jeroen. "If someone does not cooperate, it can have consequences for others in the building." That's why we ask residents to also consider each other.

4. Not connected right away? You can sign up later.

Were you not immediately connected? For example, because you were not at home or had not yet signed up? Then you can still do so. "We prefer to do everything at once," says Jeroen. "But we also do post-connections if it is technically possible." Always contact Open Dutch Fiber if you still want fiber optic.

5. You choose a provider yourself.

Open Dutch Fiber only installs the network. You can choose yourself which provider you want to subscribe to. If your home is connected to fiber optic, then you can decide with which provider you want to go online.
