We asked Jeroen Dangremond, an expert at Open Dutch Fiber. He explains step by step what you can expect.
What is a modem for fiber optic?
A modem is a device that converts the internet signal from the fiber optic connection point in your home into wifi or internet via a cable. You connect your laptop, phone, or TV to it. Without a modem, you have no internet. "We provide the connection point in the house," says Jeroen. "After that, the provider must supply the modem and activate everything." Are you getting the modem from Open Dutch Fiber?
No. Open Dutch Fiber only installs the network. The fiber optic modem is provided by the service provider with whom you sign up for an internet subscription. They often send it by mail. Sometimes a technician comes to connect everything for you. "We take care of the connection up to the house," says Jeroen. "After that, the provider takes over. They provide the modem and handle the activation of the service."
Connecting fiber optic modem: do it yourself or have it done?
Do you connect the modem yourself or do you have it done? That varies by provider. Usually, you can easily connect the modem yourself with a step-by-step plan. You plug the modem into the fiber optic point in your utility room or living room. Then you connect it to the power outlet.
"Some providers send an installation package, others send a technician," says Jeroen. "In all cases, it is important that your modem is properly connected to the fiber optic point." If everything is connected correctly, the lights on the modem will turn green. Then you can go online."
Problems with connecting the modem?
Having trouble getting the modem to work? Then contact your provider. They will check if it's an installation issue or a signal problem. If there is something wrong with the network, the provider will contact Open Dutch Fiber.
