ODF and Liander join forces for sustainable infrastructure.

On November 16, 2023, the grid operator Liander and ODF signed a collaboration agreement. This agreement establishes uniform work procedures for telecommunication and/or pipelines in project areas of ODF where Liander has energy infrastructure. The main goal of the collaboration agreement is to prevent damages to the underground infrastructure as much as possible in the future.

In the underground of the Netherlands, there are electricity cables, gas pipelines, water pipelines, telecommunication cables, and sewage systems. More and more households are being connected to the expanding fiber optic network. At the same time, Liander is actively expanding its electricity grids and making existing gas networks future-proof. This is leading to increased congestion underground, making it important for good cooperation and agreements to be made on how work is carried out in the underground.

Floris van den Broek, CEO of Open Dutch Fiber: "We are pleased with our collaboration with Liander. This ensures that working in the (often busy) underground becomes safer. We keep each other informed at all levels in both organizations about our activities, so that we can anticipate and respond quickly to the location-specific challenges that the projects entail. Together, we can carry out the installation as safely and efficiently as possible and minimize societal disruption to a minimum."

Sarike van Wette, Director of Maintenance and Faults at Liander: "After the previous collaboration agreement with another major telecom network operator, we are now taking a new step with ODF in preventing excavation damage. We do this by learning from each other, exchanging information, and establishing clear agreements and guidelines for both parties. Together, we increase safety for our employees and residents, and reduce the risk of energy interruptions due to excavation damage for our customers."

The awareness of activities underground is increased through this collaboration, making it possible to improve or adjust processes. Specifically, this means clearer and easily understandable work instructions for carrying out tasks. The goal is to prevent damages that may result from the installation of the fiber optic network or the expansion of the energy infrastructure, and to comply with laws and regulations.
