Open Dutch Fiber starts fiber optic installation in Ridderkerk.
Open Dutch Fiber will offer superfast internet via fiber optic in Ridderkerk. The construction was officially launched today by Marten Japenga, alderman of Ridderkerk, Tisha van Lammeren, director of Consumer Market Odido, and Floris van den Broek, co-CEO of Open Dutch Fiber. In November, Open Dutch Fiber will start the construction in the neighborhoods of Centrum, Bolnes, Slikkerveer, Het Zand, Drievliet, Oost, and Rijsoord. In total, more than 20,000 households will be connected. The network is expected to be completed by early 2023.
Open Dutch Fiber is currently laying fiber optic networks in Zoetermeer, Haarlem, and Utrecht. Ridderkerk is now being added to that list. Alderman Marten Japenga is pleased with the agreement. "We can now take a big step towards a modern and future-proof infrastructure in the field of telecommunications. Other providers such as Kliksafe can also start using the network. This makes the fiber optic network an attractive option for many residents of Ridderkerk." The construction works will start in November and the first houses will be connected in March 2022. This year, the organization will announce even more new projects outside Ridderkerk.
1,000,000 households
The installation of fiber optic in Ridderkerk is part of the plan presented by Open Dutch Fiber in April 2021 to connect at least 1,000,000 households in the Netherlands to fiber optic over the next five years. They choose urban areas where fiber optic is not yet available. In this way, Open Dutch Fiber makes a significant contribution to further digitalization of the Netherlands. Open Dutch Fiber sees opportunities to further expand this ambition in the coming years by connecting even more households to fiber optic.
Access to fiber optic as soon as possible for everyone
Open Dutch Fiber only installs fiber optic in places where there is currently no fiber optic available, in order to ensure that all of the Netherlands has access to competitive services via fiber optic as soon as possible.
Floris van den Broek, co-CEO of Open Dutch Fiber: "Approximately half of all Dutch people now have access to high-speed internet via fiber optic. We are particularly lagging behind in urban areas compared to other countries in Europe. In the past period, we have learned how important access to high-speed internet is now that we work from home much more. High-quality and reliable fiber optic connections are essential for the Netherlands. Therefore, Open Dutch Fiber wants to quickly provide residents of urban areas with access to all the possibilities that fiber optic offers."
