Open Dutch Fiber Logo

Many Dutch people wait too long for reliable internet.

Open Dutch Fiber has the mission to provide as many Dutch addresses as possible with a fiber optic network. The organization aims to have 2 million households connected by 2025. This requires an acceleration of the fiber optic deployment. In addition to optimizing processes and implementing innovations, collaboration is also one of the keys to success. Thanks to a new covenant with the Municipality of Amsterdam and KPN, this acceleration in the city center of the capital is within reach.

One of the enthusiasts, Floris van den Broek, says: "In 2001, the government announced plans to provide every Dutch address with a fiber optic connection. The implementation was left to the free market, but because the major parties were not interested in making that investment, it wasn't until 2008 that the first households were connected. Twenty years after the government decision, only half of the eight million Dutch addresses had been connected. The covenant describes a procedure that the City Council has now agreed upon. The covenant includes agreements that inform residents of Amsterdam when their home will be connected and what measures will be taken to minimize any inconvenience."

"We are pleased that we have been able to make these agreements with the municipality of Amsterdam and KPN.", said Floris van den Broek, CEO of ODF. "It shows our relentless commitment to provide reliable, ultra-fast connectivity to Dutch households in collaboration with, among others, Odido. We are accelerating the process while causing as little disruption as possible to residents. By the end of 2024, a large portion of addresses in Amsterdam will be able to access the open network of Open Dutch Fiber."

The covenant is another step towards achieving 2 million connections. Open Dutch Fiber continues to work together with partners and stakeholders to make the fiber optic network in the Netherlands faster, more efficient, and better every day. The company's independent nature, providing residents and businesses with freedom of choice and the most cost-effective options, remains a focal point in its operations.
