How long does it take to install fiber optic in a house?

Have you chosen fiber optic? Then you probably want to know what to expect. One of the most frequently asked questions is: how long does it actually take to install fiber optic in your home? Do you have to stay home all day for it? Or is it done quickly?

Jeroen Dangremond, manager of customer operations at Open Dutch Fiber, explains how it works and how long it approximately takes.

Installing fiber optic in your house: this is how it's done

The installation of fiber optic in the house starts with an appointment. A technician will then come to bring the cable into your home. Usually, the connection is installed in your meter cupboard. Sometimes, another location is more convenient, such as the living room.

"We always look together with the resident for the best spot," Jeroen explains. "We document this in a plan. After that, we get to work."

The cable is usually brought inside through the crawl space or facade. Then we install a fiber optic point inside the house. That is the fixed point where you will connect your modem later on.

How long does the technician take in the house?

The duration of fiber optic installation and the time the technician spends in the house depends on the type of dwelling. It takes less time in an apartment than in a detached house.

"At apartments, we usually finish in 45 minutes per unit," says Jeroen. "For single-story buildings, it takes a bit longer. Then we are busy for about 2 to 3 hours."

Sometimes it takes a little longer. For example, when the cable needs to be pulled further or when the ground is difficult. But usually everything is arranged within a few hours.

Do you have to stay at home during the installation?

Yes, when we install fiber optic in the house, someone needs to be at home. The technician needs to enter to install the connection point and test if everything is working properly. Make sure you are ready on time for the appointment. Usually, you will receive a time frame in advance for our visit.

"We need to go inside to wrap everything up neatly," says Jeroen. "We will install the fiber optic inside the house, test for signal, and ensure that everything is left in good condition. For this, we need access to the property."

This way you can be sure that the connection is working properly and ready for use.

What happens after the installation?

Once the connection is installed in your home, we will test if everything is working properly. After that, your house is ready for use. Your provider will ensure that you can actually go online. "We connect, the provider activates the service," explains Jeroen. "Sometimes they send a technician, sometimes you receive an installation package at home." After that installation, you can start using fiber optic internet. Want to know more about connecting to your router? Read the article:How do you connect fiber optic to your router?
