How does preparing for fiber in an apartment work?

When an apartment building is connected to fiber, there is more going on behind the scenes than residents can see. Even before a technician arrives, Open Dutch Fiber draws up a detailed connection plan for the entire building. This plan determines how the cables will be laid, which apartments will be connected and when, and how we can make the work run as smoothly as possible. We spoke about this with Teresa Moriana, Team Lead Relationship Management at Open Dutch Fiber. She guides apartments through this preparatory phase on a daily basis and knows exactly why this plan is so important.

What exactly is a fiber connection plan?

The connection plan is the technical roadmap for the entire building. It specifies how we can safely and logically reach each home, through which rooms the cable will run, and where the fiber point will be located. Think of meter boxes, common areas, shafts, or places where existing pipes run.

Teresa explains why this is necessary: “In an apartment building, you can't just start drilling. We need to know exactly how we will reach each home in advance. Once the plan is in place, the installation can be done quickly and neatly.” The plan also specifies how much time each phase will take. This way, residents know how long the work will take and what to expect.

Why is a connection plan for fiber so important?

A good connection plan prevents delays, unnecessary inconvenience, and uncertainty. Without a plan, technicians have to make decisions on the spot, which takes extra time. According to Teresa, such a plan provides peace of mind: “Residents want to know what is going to happen and when. By making that clear in advance, we avoid surprises and keep the work to a minimum.”

Because one team can connect the entire building in a logical order, we don't have to visit as often and the total lead time remains low.

Who does ODF work with to draw up the fiber connection plan?

The connection plan is a team effort. Three parties play an important role:

  1. The homeowners' association or landlord: They give permission for work in common areas and help decide on routes that are logical and safe.

  2. The contractor: The contractor translates the plan into concrete work: which cables, which route, and which technical solutions are best suited to the building.

  3. ODF itself: We determine the technical requirements, monitor quality, and ensure that the plan works for every home.

Teresa emphasizes this collaboration: “No two apartments are the same. That's why we always make the plan together. The homeowners' association knows the building, we know what is technically necessary. These two aspects really have to go hand in hand.”

How long does it take to prepare for fiber in an apartment building?

The preparation usually takes a few weeks. The exact time depends on:

  • the size of the building;

  • the technical layout (e.g., shafts or crawl spaces);

  • how many parties are involved in the decision-making process, such as the manager, homeowners' association, or landlord.

In addition, ODF often completes several buildings in the same neighborhood one after the other. This can make it seem as if nothing is happening, while in fact the planning is being worked out. Teresa: “We want to do it right the first time. A good plan ensures that the installation will go smoothly for every resident in the building.”
