Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. There are so many fiber plans that it's tempting to just go for the lowest price. But a cheap subscription that doesn't fit your household mainly results in frustration. The trick is to choose a package that really suits how you use the internet at home. We asked Jeroen Dangremond, Manager Customer Operations at Open Dutch Fiber, to explain what to pay attention to.
Comparing fiber starts with your usage
Many people jump right into comparison tables, but according to Jeroen, it works differently: “A package only fits if it matches your household. That's the real starting point.” So first look at what happens in your home. How many devices are online at the same time? Do you stream daily? Are there gamers at home? Or do you work from home and need stable internet for video calls?
Once you have that clear, you'll see much faster which packages suit you. Fiber is often the best foundation because it can handle large amounts of data simultaneously. This provides peace and stability in busy households.
What speed suits your household?
Once you know how you use the internet, you can determine which speed corresponds with that. This prevents you from paying too much but also ensures that your connection does not become too slow.
● 100 Mbit for light usage such as streaming, surfing, and occasional video calling;
● 200–500 Mbit for households with multiple devices at the same time;
● 1 Gbit or higher for heavy usage: working from home, gaming, large uploads.
Jeroen sees that higher speed is needed more often than people think: “Households use more and more devices simultaneously. A stable connection becomes more important than ever.” Fiber enable these higher speeds without your connection slowing down when more people are online.

Fiber providers: how to choose the best provider?
Now that you know which speed suits you, you can start comparing providers. Fiber providers differ in:
● price;
● speeds per package;
● promotions or welcome discounts;
● extras, such as TV, a Wi-Fi booster, or installation help.
Even when providers use the same network, the packages can be very different.Jeroen sees that residents are often surprised by this: “Each provider makes its own choices in packages and prices. The differences can be quite significant.” Comparing really helps to avoid surprises.
Internet and TV: when to choose a combination package?
With fiber, you can usually choose from three types of packages. Which choice is best depends on how you use internet, TV, and telephony.
Internet-only
Do you watch TV via apps like Netflix, YouTube, or NPO Start? Then internet-only is often sufficient. You only pay for internet and choose which streaming services you use. Jeroen often sees this: “Households that only need internet, find internet-only usually the cheapest option.”
Internet and TV
Do you also like watching live TV, such as sports or news, besides streaming? Or are there people at home who prefer regular TV watching? Then a package with internet and TV can be convenient. You combine the convenience of live TV with fast internet.
All-in-1
Do you also use landline telephony? Then an all-in-1 plan fits. It's straightforward, but often also more expensive. If you hardly make any landline calls, you quickly pay for something you don't use.
Jeroen sums it up simply: “Don't automatically choose the largest package, but look at what you really need. That saves money every month.”

Cheap fiber internet: what to look out for?
A low monthly fee sounds attractive, but cheap internet is only really cheap if it suits your household. According to Jeroen, many people only see the promotional price, while the real costs often lie elsewhere: “People often look at the lowest price, but that says very little. It’s about what you get in return and whether it works for your household.”
Therefore, pay attention to a few important points:
● The price after the welcome discount. The first few months are often cheaper, but then you pay the real rate.
● The speed you really need. Too slow internet leads to hiccups; too fast internet can be unnecessarily expensive.
● Any extra costs. Think about installation costs or Wi-Fi boosters.
● The switching conditions. Can you easily cancel? Does the new provider handle the switch for you?
By paying attention to these points, you prevent surprises and choose a subscription that not only seems cheap but also remains cheap.
