Fiber comparison per household: which speed suits your situation?

Everyone wants fast and stable internet, but not everyone uses the internet in the same way. One household streams all evening, while another mainly conducts video calls or games. Therefore, choosing the right fiber package can sometimes be more challenging than it seems. Jeroen Dangremond, Manager Customer Operations at Open Dutch Fiber, explains how to smartly compare fiber.

If you compare fiber you are actually looking at two things: what speed suits your household and which provider can deliver that to your home. Only when you know what you need, comparing becomes much easier.

Many people immediately look at the price, but according to Jeroen, that is not the best first step: “A package only works well if it suits your household. Too little speed mainly causes frustration.”

That's why you start with your own usage. For example, pay attention to how many devices are online at the same time, whether you do a lot of video calling or work from home, and whether you game or download large files. The more intensive your use, the more important a stable connection becomes.

According to Jeroen, fiber is well built for that: “Fiber can handle much more data simultaneously than cable or DSL. Therefore, it works most reliably for many households.”

What speed suits your household?

Knowing how you use the internet allows you to determine the speed that suits it. This prevents you from paying too little or too much. Here are simple guidelines:

●        100 Mbit for light use, such as streaming and surfing;

●        200–500 Mbit for families using multiple devices simultaneously;

●        1 Gbit or higher for intensive use, such as gaming, working from home, and large uploads.

Jeroen notes that a higher speed often fits better than people expect: “Households use so many devices simultaneously that a stable network is more important than ever. It’s smart to not only look at today but also how your internet usage may grow next year.”

How do you choose the best fiber provider?

Have you determined your ideal speed? Then you can compare providers. They often deliver over the same network, but differ in what you actually get. Think of:

●        the price per month;

●        the speed you get;

●        potential installation costs;

●        the contract duration;

●        extras like TV or WiFi boosters.

Jeroen notes that these differences are bigger than people think: “Each provider makes its own choices in packages and service. Therefore, the offer per provider can really feel different.”
