Do you want to extend a fiber cable? This is what you need to know according to an expert

Do you have fiber in your house, but want to move the connection point to a different location? For example, because your meter cupboard has been relocated or because you prefer to have your modem in the living room? You may be wondering: can I extend the fiber cable?

We asked Jeroen Dangremond, manager of customer operations at Open Dutch Fiber. He explains what is and isn't possible.

Can you extend a fiber cable yourself?

No, you cannot extend a fiber cable yourself as it requires technical work. The cable is made of thin glass that cannot be simply cut or extended like an electrical cable.

"A fiber cable cannot be easily extended," says Jeroen. "If necessary, the cable needs to be spliced. We do this using special equipment." Therefore, always have it done by an expert.

Want to know more about the connection of fiber in the meter cupboard? You can read about it in the article: Fiber connection in the meter box: what you need to know

When is it necessary to extend a fiber cable?

Sometimes the connection point is placed in the meter cupboard, but later on you might prefer it to be in a different location in the house. For example, in the living room. "If residents want their modem somewhere else, we can move the connection," explains Jeroen. "But we have to do it because it involves fiber."

Has the connection already been made, but do you want to move it later? Then contact Open Dutch Fiber. We will then look together to see if it is possible to extend the fiber cable or create a new connection.

Please note: there may be costs associated with this. Always inquire about this in advance.

Do not: cut or move fiber cable yourself.

Never try to do anything to the fiber cable yourself. If you damage the cable, you will lose your internet connection. It can also cause problems in the network. "We have experienced someone trying to extend the cable themselves," says Jeroen. "This resulted in the entire connection breaking."
