How long does it take to install fiber in the house?

Did you choose fiber? Then, of course, you want to know how fast it goes. Many residents wonder: how long does it take to install fiber in the house? Do you need to stay home all day, or is it arranged quickly? Jeroen Dangremond, Manager Customer Operations at Open Dutch Fiber, explains what you can expect.

The installation of fiber in the house starts with an appointment. A technician then comes by to bring the cable into your home. Usually, you get the connection in your meter cupboard. Sometimes another place is more convenient, such as the living room.

“We always review with the resident what the best place is,” says Jeroen. “We establish that in a plan. Then we get started.”

The cable is usually brought inside via the crawl space or facade. Then we place a fiber point in the house. That is the fixed point where you will later connect your modem. Read here about how the installation of fiber in the house in 5 steps goes.

How long is the technician busy in the house?

How long the installation of fiber takes and the technician is busy in the house depends on the type of house. In an apartment, it takes less time than in a detached house.

“In apartments, we are usually done in 45 minutes per residence,” says Jeroen. “In low-rise buildings, it takes a bit longer. Then we are busy for about two to three hours.”

Sometimes it takes a bit longer. For example, if the cable has to be extended far or if the ground is difficult. But usually, everything is arranged within a few hours.

Do you have to stay at home during the installation?

Yes, if we are installing fiber in the house, someone needs to be home. The technician must enter to place the connection point and test if everything works properly. Therefore, make sure you are ready on time for the appointment. Usually, you will receive a time window in advance when we will come by.

“We need to come inside to neatly finish everything,” says Jeroen. “We splice the fiber at home, test if there is a signal, and make sure it is left properly. For this, we need access to the home.”

This way, you can be sure that the connection works well and is ready for use.

Why do you sometimes need your NTE?

In apartments or buildings with several residences, there is often already an initial fiber point in the house: the NTE (the connection point). ODF needs that point to extend the network further through the building. Without access to that NTE, the route cannot be completed.

Many residents do not know that their connection affects the entire building. Therefore, Jeroen emphasizes: “Without access to all the necessary connection points, we cannot complete a building. One missing point sometimes holds back the installation for everyone.”

My building manager does not cooperate. What can I do?

Sometimes a manager, owner, or HOA wants extra information before giving permission. That can delay the installation. In that case, you can always contact ODF. We then send clear information about the work, planning, and benefits for the building.

Tip: talk to your neighbors and ask if they are also interested in fiber. The more residents participate, the easier it will be to get approval from the manager.

I requested a fiber connection. Why does it sometimes take longer?

Many residents expect the connection to be installed immediately, but in apartment complexes, the speed depends on several factors:

●       We need permission from the owner or HOA.

●       We need to be able to work in common areas.

●       Sometimes several residences need to be accessible at the same time.

If one residence or space is temporarily inaccessible, this can delay the installation in the entire building. Jeroen repeats: “Residents sometimes think it's only about their home. But in flats, we build a network for the entire building. We need several homes for that.”

What happens after the installation?

As soon as the connection is in place in your house, we test if everything works properly. Then your home is ready for use. Your provider ensures that you can actually go online. “We connect, the provider activates the service,” explains Jeroen. “Sometimes they send a technician, sometimes you receive an installation package at home.” After that installation, you can use fiber internet.
