Switching to fiber: how does it work and when is it smart to switch?

More and more people are switching to fiber internet. Fiber work with very thin glass cables, which send information at the speed of light. This makes fiber faster and more stable than cable or DSL. It is therefore ideal for video calls, streaming, working from home, and multiple devices at the same time. Is there fiber in your street? Then switching can be an improvement. But how does switching to fiber actually work? And when is it wise to cancel your old subscription? We asked Jeroen Dangremond, Manager Customer Operations at Open Dutch Fiber.

Switching to fiber always starts with choosing a provider that delivers fiber to your address. Jeroen sees that many residents are surprised at how easy this is: “The provider takes care of almost everything for the resident. You hardly have to do anything yourself.”

Many people wonder if they have to cancel their old internet subscription first. Usually, this is not necessary because many providers offer a switch service. They cancel your old subscription on your behalf and ensure that the contracts align nicely. Jeroen thinks this is also the safest choice: “It works best if the provider arranges the cancellation moment. Then everything connects well.” This switch service prevents you from being without internet and avoids double payments.

Switching internet providers: how do you choose a provider?

When you switch to fiber, you can choose from several providers on the ODF network. They differ in speed, price, and extra options like TV. Jeroen emphasizes that the provider determines the speed you get: “The provider determines the speed. We only have the highway they can ride on.”

Therefore, compare different packages. A small household often needs less speed than a family with many devices.

When is switching to fiber wise?

Switching to fiber is especially wise if your current internet does not work well or does not suit your usage.

You can switch if:

●        your internet is slow or unstable;

●        you need more upload for video calls;

●        your contract is about to end;

●        there are switch deals;

●        fiber network is laid out in your street.

Fiber offers clear advantages. The connection is more stable than cable or DSL, even when multiple devices are online simultaneously. Download and upload are often equally fast, which is convenient for video calls, working from home, and sharing files. Additionally, fiber is less prone to interference and ready for future use, as the network can handle much more data simultaneously.

According to Jeroen, our internet needs grow every year: “Our households demand more and more data. Fiber is therefore a good choice for now and later.”

Switch deals: what can you expect?

Many providers make switching to fiber extra attractive with special offers. These switch deals can save you a lot. Think of temporary discounts on your monthly fee, free installation or getting a free modem or wifi booster. Sometimes you even get a welcome gift or a lower price in the first few months.

Which deals are available varies by provider and time. Therefore, it is smart to compare the offers well when choosing a new fiber package. This way you can immediately benefit from extra advantages when you switch.
