How does fiber work?

Fiber internet is super fast and reliable. But how does fiber actually work? And what does this technology mean for you? Bas Meeuwissen, Passive Infrastructure Architect at Open Dutch Fiber, works daily on the construction of fiber optic networks. He explains why fiber is so fast and stable and what this means for your internet usage.

How does fiber internet work?

Fiber internet uses thin cables made of glass or plastic. Data travels through these cables as light signals. Because light is very fast, fiber optic can transmit and receive large amounts of information very quickly.

According to Bas Meeuwissen, fiber optic works differently than other networks: "Because fiber optic transmits signals with light, the connection is faster and more stable. Copper is prone to interference and signal loss, especially over long distances."

Why do I need a fiber connection?

With fiber optic, the cable is brought directly to your house. This is called a fiber optic connection. From this connection, the internet is distributed to your devices, such as your phone, laptop, or TV. This is done through a modem. A modem is a device that converts the internet connection into a signal that your devices can use. It ensures that all your devices are connected to the internet.

The result? Superfast internet without interruptions, whether you're streaming, working, or gaming. "With fiber optic, you always have a stable and fast connection," says Bas. "You don't have to worry about disruptions or delays, even if the whole house is online at the same time."

What does fiber mean to you?

Fiber optic provides a better internet experience. These are the benefits:

Faster downloading and uploading. Download large files in seconds or upload videos seamlessly.

Streaming movies and series without interruptions. Watch everything in high quality without interruptions.

Stable internet. Your internet remains reliable, even when you use multiple devices at the same time.

Working from home without stress. Video calls are sharp and free of interference.

Lag-free gaming. No more delays during online games. With fiber optic, the ping (response time) is much lower than with other connections, allowing your actions to be executed immediately and avoiding any interruptions. This ensures a smooth and fair gaming experience.

How to switch to fiber internet

Switching to fiber is easy. First, check via the postcode check to see if fiber internet is already available at your address. If fiber is possible, choose an internet provider and subscribe to a plan that suits your needs.

Once your subscription is arranged, a technician will come by to prepare the fiber connection. After that, you can immediately enjoy super-fast and reliable internet.
